contigo - Smart Spout™ Connected water Bottle

Personal Electronic Device for Quantified Hydration

OPPORTUNITY

Given the popularity of the quantified-self trend and the rising consumer adoption of fitness wearables like Fit Bit, there is an opportunity for Contigo to create and launch a Smart Bottle to help people track, monitor and optimize their water intake. This product will help deliver on Newell's overall business objective to continue to position Contigo upmarket. We will win against competition not by being first to market, but by being best to market.  We will launch an intuitive and simple to use Smart Bottle that includes our proprietary AUTOSPOUT technology along with a free smartphone APP for tracking.

TARGET CONSUMER

Reusable water bottle users who also own and use both a Smart Phone and a wearable fitness tracking device. These users are heavily involved in the quantified-self trend so it is important to them to track daily activity including steps and exercise, sleep, and food/beverage intake. They are also interested in specifically tracking their water intake to achieve optimal hydration levels every day. In terms of their purchase behavior, this user is considered an “Optimizer” meaning they are looking for performance, quality, and premium aesthetics in their Smart Bottle.

DESIGN DIRECTION

Sophisticated, premium design that looks tech-letic. The design should offer a distinct and unique aesthetic relative to existing hydration bottles. It should celebrate the bottle’s “techy-ness”. However, it is important that the product still look like a water bottle (unlike some of the current Kickstarter competition that looks like a travel mug or cup). The industrial design should signal premium performance to the consumer and be inspired by trends from high performance athletic and personal electronic brands like Nike, Fit Bit, Apple, Bose, Beats By Dre etc.
